Ukraine has launched its first nuclear facility of global significance for peaceful purposes. It was developed by Ukrainian specialists of the National Scientific Center “Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology”. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, took part in the test run of the Source of Neutrons facility on March 23 at the National Science Center, Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology. Petro Poroshenko noted, that the launch of this modern nuclear facility is a historical even for Ukraine.
During the launch of the facility “Source of Neutrons” Poroshenko emphasized that this project is a good example of cooperation in the field of nuclear security and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, informed press center of the President. Modern technologies applied in this project prevent any accident.
Petro Porosheno stated, that Ukraine has made a huge contribution into the program of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. This involves refusal from the world third largest nuclear arsenal, transmission of highly enriched uranium and cooperation with international organizations in order to improve technological security.
The President of Ukraine believes, that Source of Neutrons facility will enable Ukraine to conduct modern research in various fields of technology and science, develop a large spectrum of radioisotopes for medicine and industry needs, solve problems of nuclear power industry and extend operating lives of nuclear power plants.
“Physical-Technical Institute of Kharkiv is a flagship of Ukrainian physical science,” the President said.
The Source of Neutrons facility is being elaborated jointly with the Argonne National Laboratory of USA, Germany, China, Great Britain, Switzerland and France.
