Solar Power Plant

The Chornobyl exclusion zone is the best place to build a solar power plant. It has the potential to produce electricity for 140,000 households, according to Maria Yakovleva, who is a member of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine.

“Construction of a solar power plant requires a large piece of land that is not used in agriculture. The Chornobyl exclusion zone is the best option for this idea. For Ukraine it will be also an opportunity to breathe some life into a depressed region, to bring investment, create new jobs, increase revenues to the local and national budgets. But the main goal of this project would be to develop alternative energy sources, and reduce Ukraine’s dependence on Russia’s energy supply.” – ,” Yakovleva noted.

According to the expert, the largest solar heliothermal power plant in California (USA) Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System could be an example for such a project.

“It is interesting, that this solar power plant does not use solar panels, but usual mirrors. If we can attract investors, we will also be able to reduce the amount of harmful emissions, that is equivalent to the pollution from 77 thousand vehicles,” – Maria Yakovleva said.

She stressed that Ukraine needs to offer investors stable and predictable investment conditions. The state must guarantee that it will not interfere in the activities of the investor.

According to Yakovleva, foreign investors have been interested in building a solar power plant in Chornobyl for several years, but but they want not only to hear invitations from the Ukrainian government but also to have guarantees.

“Investors were coming to the Chornobyl exclusion zone. They offered to build a solar power plant. German investors were coming for two years, but they were told that they would need to give a share in the new company. So, the Germans left. American investors were coming as well, and others. In fact, this place could be attractive for investments, “- the Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said. According to him, in order to increase the investment attractiveness of the Chornobyl exclusion zone the management structure will be completely reformatted.
