November 9, on the day of Venerable Nestor the Chronicler Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian literature and language.
This holiday was established by presidential decree of 1997 year, taking into account the important role of the Ukrainian language in consolidation of Ukrainian society.
The date of November 9 was not chosen occasionally. It is believed that written Ukrainian language started with Nestor the Chronicler. Thorough researches of roots of Ukrainian written language are still being held.
Traditionally on this day people lay flowers on the monument to Nestor the Chronicler, award the best promoters of the Ukrainian language, encourage editions which publish Ukrainian literature.
